How to Optimize Your Website

Written on May 28, 2008 – 8:53 pm | by SEO Guy

When you have a website that you are using for a business it is important for that site to be found within the search engines. It can be difficult to compete with so many other websites on the internet so optimizing your website in order for it to get brought to the top of the search results is a necessity. You may be wondering how, exactly, does that task get accomplished. It does not have to be complicated, but knowing a little bit of html is required.

When viewing the html code of your website it looks like a bunch of mumbo jumbo at first, but when you learn what the different symbols stand for it makes it a lot easier. All the tags start with <tag> and end with </tag> So, for the title of your website it would look like this

<title>Title Goes Here</title>

When choosing your title you want it to have the keywords you want to optimize your website for. Choose keywords that are longer and not too competitive.

You can use tools like Overture or Word Tracker to choose your keywords. These tools will tell you how competitive your chosen keywords are and how many times they are searched for each month. Take the keywords you chose and place them in the title, h1, h2, alt, and meta keyword tags. Sprinkle those keywords throughout the body of your website making sure they are at the beginning and end.

Try to keep the menu on the right side of the page. Search engines read a website from the right down, center down then left down. You want the majority of your keywords in the body of the website not the menu, Keep the density of your keywords between 2%-6% for maximum benefit. You can check this with a keyword density tool on the web. Just do a search and it will come up.

The alt attributes are within the image tag. When you put a keyword within these attributes it will show on the webpage when the cursor is hovering over that image. Using your keywords in some of the text links on your website will also help the optimization of your website.

Some basic html knowledge is needed when optimizing a website but there are plenty of places on the internet where you can learn the basics. Doing the things described in this article will give you the best chance of getting to the top of the search engines. This helps bring targeted visitors to your website and eventually sales for your business.

When you get the hang of all this you can add other keywords to your site and start ranking high in the search engines for those terms as well. It takes time to learn and it takes time to rank highly for your chosen keywords but it is possible to do without having to be too difficult.

Wordpress Plugins - Wordpress Plugins For SEO

Written on May 21, 2008 – 8:52 pm | by SEO Guy

Yes, wordpress by itself is already SEO-friendly & it can get you ranked high on search engines for targeted keywords.

When wordpress was new, all you had to do was install it on your domain & you get instant SEO, or instant search engine traffic.

Then some people started to abuse wordpress blogs by creating spam blogs with worthless content which the whole purpose was to get AdSense clicks or to promote affiliate programs.

The search engines wised up & dropped many of these junk blogs from their search listings.

Optimizing wordpress for SEO is no longer as easy as before! Wait, you can still optimize it by using a few plugins.

SEO Title Tag plugin

Adds the title text of your blogs in front of the name of your blog post, making it easier for search engines to know exactly what your post is about.

Headspace plugin

Adds meta description on each & every of your blog post, all these can be done, right inside the admin panel of wordpress, simple? No need to ftp or look at html code.

Link Structure Modification

This is not a plugin, it’s a simple hack you can do yourself. Simply change your link structure, so that your link looks like blog.com/post-name, rather than blog.com/p?534. This makes you as a blogger appear more professional to your readers.

Search engines can identify /post-name much easier than /p?534. Makes sense?

H1 Tags & Category Names

Once again, this is not a plugin, you need to edit your wordpress template in such a way that your blog post title is a H1 tag, this will once again help search engines know clearly what your blog post is all about.

When naming your category, make sure they are relevant in their keywords, this will make the overall navigation of your blog clearer to both visitors & search engines.

On-Page SEO Tips For Wordpress Blogs

Written on May 14, 2008 – 8:50 pm | by SEO Guy

SEO (search engine optimization) & blogs (especially wordpress) go very well together. Because the link structure of wordpress is optimum for search engine spiders to crawl & regularly updating nature of blogs is what search engines love.

On-page SEO means the way the site or blog is being built, such as the layout, the linking structure, the title text, meta description. This may sound like basic information but without it, it’s like a building with a weak foundation - which won’t last long.

Using SEO title plugin, you can put the title of your blog in your title text automatically, right in front of the name of your blog. This is important as the search engines read from left to right, just like humans.

Putting the name of your blog post in title text makes it easier for them to crawl & know exactly what your site is about.

So when you post on your blog, remember to put the keyword in the name of your post & it would automatically appear in your title text.

Link structure is another thing that search engine spiders & even human visitors would use to determine what your blog post is about.

A neat link structure would tell the search engines clearly what the post is about & for humans, it would be easier to remember a neat link structure.

blog.com/p?2395 vs blog.com/name-of-post Just look at these 2 links & determine which you’ll remember easier. Obviously the second link, right?

So just put yourself in your visitors’ shoes, when a visitor remembers a link, even if he forgot to bookmark it, he can still come back to it. Repeat visitors will eventually build you a more loyal reader base.

After you build a really strong following of reader, advertisers & merchants will chase after you to pay you for advertising. There’ll also be more ways you can monetize your blogs as you build more readers.

“Build it & they’ll come!” - that’s a half truth! The reality is “build it well & the targeted visitors will come.”

How Do I Increase My Google Page Rank?

Written on April 30, 2008 – 8:46 pm | by SEO Guy

Google has become the gold standard by which an Internet surfer searches for something on the world wide web. By entering in a few words into their search box, you instantaneously are shown thousands if not hundred of thousands of results for the words entered.

If you have ever wondered how they can return those results so quickly, the answer is very simply the Google algorithm. It is this algorithm in which Google uses to index every webpage on the Internet. This indexing then ranks the pages based on importance on a scale of 0 to 10, with one being the lowest and ten of course being the highest.

This importance is tracked by the number of of other web pages that link back to it. The algorithm goes into more depth than that, but basically that is how it works. Your goal to build up your website or blog should be to increase its rank. Increasing its rank will invariably display your information higher on the list during a Google search for keywords that your site includes.

Below are a few ways to assist in achieving that higher rank.

Exchange Links. You want to exchange links with other websites or blogs that have similar content as yours. You contact a site and ask if they would like to display your link information, and in exchange you will display theirs. We have done this on our site with over 3,500 different sites and it was worked wonderfully for us. We basically exchange with everybody, but that is because our site handles a variety of topics. Find sites to exchange links with and contact them. The more links you have, the better off you will.

One Way Links. Unlike a link exchange where two sites link to each other, a one way link is just what it sounds like. It is a link from a web site or blog that only links to you, however you are not required to link back to them. A good way to achieve this is to create them. There are a number of advertising websites out there that allow you to post an ad for free. Craigslist, AdPost and Indocquent are just a few Post your link information to them all. These are your one way links. One way links carry more weight in the Google algorithm them swapped links. However, combining the two will increase it that much more.

More One Way Links. Another great way to get one way links is to partake in online discussions. For instance we publish all kinds of articles related to a variety of topics on our website. A feature that we recently implemented was allowing readers to comment on the article. This is a great area to comment on the article and leave a link to your website or blog. The comment never expires and if what you write is well thought out and helpful to other readers, they may just click on it to visit what you are promoting.

Father Time. Time is your best friend and your enemy here. Although it has never been confirmed, rumor has it that the Google algorithm includes a system check in there for the length of time your web site or blog has been around. With good reason if you think about it. Thousands of website are created daily, many disappear after a month. It would be a strain on Google`s indexing system to constantly weed out these sites that never make it. Therefore, the longer a site has been around the favorably it is looked upon. So as you can see time is your friend if your site has been around awhile, and your enemy if it is fairly new.

So there you have it four different ways you can help increase the Google page rank for your site or blog.
